Illegal Dumping

Illegal dumping and littering are crimes.

In Dayton, we are serious about fighting illegal dumping.

Illegal dumping is another inexcusable crime that pollutes our land and violates the rights of others. This unhealthy and unsightly crime promotes the deterioration of neighborhoods and attracts criminal activity. There are many resources available to properly dispose of solid waste.

Areas used for illegal dumping may be easily accessible to people, especially children, who are vulnerable to sharp objects, hazardous chemicals and many other health and safety hazards.

Illegal dumping is everybody’s problem. Whether we pay directly or indirectly -- we all pay! Make the clean and healthy choice by pitching in to keep the community clean. Pitching in to keep your community clean means getting involved -- not standing by, but standing in.

Penalties for illegal dumping:  Up to $1,000 fine and six months in jail

Call 333-3977 to report illegal dumping.

Here are ways you can help:

  • Communicate with your Priority Board about neighborhood problems
  • Participate in alley and neighborhood clean-ups
  • Put litter in approved receptacles -- where it belongs
  • Utilize free recycling opportunities
  • Manage your solid waste (visit Montgomery County Solid Waste District Web site)
  • Adopt a block, street, park or recruit volunteers; set one hour, one day each month to police the area to rid it of litter
  • Report illegal dumping; individuals may not be directly dumping on your property, but they are dumping in your community where your children play.

Littering and dumping portray a negative perception of our city, our community and our neighborhoods.  It is a problem that requires a partnership of our government, organizations and citizens, who enjoy the benefits of a clean community. It takes a little effort to help in the fight to keep our city clean. It takes very little effort to do the right thing by respecting the rights of others and their properties. This respect helps to ensure a healthy, safe and clean environment for all to live and play.

Facts about illegal dumping:

  • Poses Health Risks—provides ideal breeding grounds for disease-carrying mosquitoes and rodents.

  • Lowers property values—property values are lower in areas that have litter and dumping problems.

  • Discourages investment—investors are less likely to invest in these areas; development is hindered.

  • Attracts criminal activity—criminals tend to migrate in the areas that appear to be unkept, which increases the problem.

  • Encourages additional dumping—most illegal dumpers and litterers prefer to dump in areas that already have dumped items.

  • Costly to taxpayers—dumping costs the taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars each year.

  • Contaminates waterways and drinking water.
